Hidden Dangers Lurk: Yorkshire Water Urges No Reservoir Dips
22 May
Summary
- Reservoirs pose risks like cold water shock and hidden currents.
- Submerged structures and sudden drops present dangers for swimmers.
- Reservoir stocks are healthier despite predictions of a heatwave.

As temperatures are forecasted to climb to 29C (84F) this bank holiday weekend, Yorkshire Water has issued a stern warning advising the public against swimming in its reservoirs. The company highlights the severe risks associated with entering these waters, including cold water shock, dangerous hidden currents, sudden depth changes, and submerged structures. Tragically, lives have already been lost this year in Yorkshire's reservoirs and other open water, prompting a strong plea for caution. Rangers will be present at approximately 120 reservoirs to enforce rules, including a ban on barbecues and fires. While the weather is predicted to be warm, reservoir water stocks are healthier than last year, currently at 86.4% full, due to cooler temperatures and more rainfall in 2026, alongside reduced demand and leakage. Customers are still encouraged to conserve water, for example by using a watering can instead of a hose for gardens.
