York's Recycling Overhaul: Bins or Boxes?
1 Sep
Summary
- York may switch to wheeled bins for recycling.
- Over 63% in consultation favored wheeled bins.
- New system unlikely before summer 2027.

City of York Council is preparing to potentially replace the existing 'three box' recycling system with wheeled bins for tens of thousands of households. A recent public consultation garnered over 13,000 responses, with more than 63% indicating a preference for wheeled bins due to ease of use.
Senior Councillor Jenny Kent stated the move would boost recycling capacity, improve street cleanliness, and enhance safety. Council officials anticipate the new system, which involves an alternating two-week collection cycle for recyclables, will not be operational before summer 2027. Household and garden waste collections will remain unchanged.
Approximately 63,000 homes are targeted for the initial phase of wheeled bin implementation. However, an additional 10,000 terraced properties with limited storage space will require further assessment. Councillor Kent emphasized the council's commitment to finding practical solutions for residents facing storage challenges with the new bins.
