Yokohama Zoological Gardens Zoorasia is now displaying a baby red-shanked douc langur, a species often called the 'world's most beautiful monkey.' The infant, named 'Mi,' was born in January and has been growing exceptionally well over the past four months, quickly becoming a beloved attraction.
Mi's name, meaning 'beautiful' in Vietnamese, reflects the primate's native habitat. Visitors had the opportunity to vote on the name, adding a unique community aspect to the baby's introduction. The red-shanked douc langur is an endangered species celebrated for its distinct and vibrant fur.
In Japan, the presence of this rare monkey is limited to only two facilities: Zoorasia and Tokuyama Zoo. The baby douc langur, often seen clinging to its parents, Moi and Hoa, has recently begun to confidently explore its habitat. As of late April, it was observed venturing out on its own, demonstrating steady growth and development.
