Yellowstone Hot Spring Erupts in Muddy Spectacle!
23 Dec
Summary
- Black Diamond Pool in Yellowstone erupted with muddy plumes.
- An official camera captured the spectacular event on Saturday.
- Recent eruptions have been better monitored with new equipment.

The Black Diamond Pool, a hot spring in Yellowstone National Park, produced a dramatic eruption of muddy plumes over the weekend. This spectacular event was captured on an official camera on Saturday morning, offering a clear view of the hydrothermal activity.
Experts from the US Geological Survey described the eruption, noting that while previous events were often obscured by darkness or ice, new monitoring instruments installed this summer have significantly improved the ability to record these phenomena. The new camera and seismic station paid off with a clear recording under bright skies.
Yellowstone National Park is renowned for its abundance of hydrothermal features, including over 10,000 hot springs and 500 geysers. The Black Diamond Pool has experienced sporadic eruptions, some reaching up to 40 feet, since a larger event in July 2024 damaged a nearby boardwalk.
