Six states have finalized the Kishau project agreement, paving the way for a new dam on the Tons River. This critical infrastructure, a 232.6-meter-high concrete gravity dam, will boast a storage capacity of 1,562 million cubic metres. Delhi and Rajasthan have agreed to finance the power generation component of the project. In return, they will receive a substantial share of the water.
Union Minister CR Patil announced that this agreement will ensure 75% of the water flows into the Yamuna, with Rajasthan receiving 25%. The increased freshwater flow is expected to greatly aid in cleaning the Yamuna, particularly its heavily polluted stretch through Delhi, which currently receives most of its flow from drains. The project also includes plans to divert cattle dung for biogas production under the Gobardhan scheme.
Beyond water security, the Kishau project is projected to irrigate approximately 97,000 hectares of land. It is also set to generate 1,476 million units of clean hydropower. The government is also implementing measures to prevent sewage and waste from entering the river, with a significant portion of the assigned tasks already commenced.
