Delhi Sets Up 41 Stations to Track Yamuna's Health

The Delhi government is implementing a significant environmental initiative by setting up 41 online monitoring stations (OLMS) to track the Yamuna River and its contributing drains in real-time. The project, with a tender awarded in March and completion expected by April-end, marks a crucial step in the government's plan to clean the river.

Of the 41 stations, 35 will be dedicated to monitoring major drains, while the remaining six will assess the pollution load directly on the Yamuna. Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa highlighted that this move will enhance transparency and accountability by providing crucial real-time data on pollution levels. This data is essential for identifying problem areas and fixing responsibility.

These advanced OLMS will continuously measure parameters such as temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, BOD, COD, and conductivity. While fecal coliform, a key indicator of sewage, will still be monitored manually, the OLMS data will be accessible to the public, similar to air and noise pollution data displayed by the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC).

The monitoring system will become operational in May, providing round-the-clock data transmission to the DPCC server. Six key locations along the Yamuna have been selected for monitor installation, including Palla, ISBT bridge, ITO, Nizamuddin bridge, Okhla barrage, and Asgarpur. This new system will augment the DPCC's current monthly water sampling at eight locations.
