According to a recent water analysis report, Delhi's Yamuna river stretch between Wazirabad and Okhla is heavily polluted by 22 drains discharging untreated effluents. The Shahdara, Barapullah, and Sen Nursing Home drains have been identified as the most contaminated.
Analysis revealed that none of the 22 monitored drains met the prescribed biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) standards, indicating significant organic pollution. Drains from neighboring states like Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, including the L3 and Sahibabad drains, also contribute substantial untreated sewage and industrial discharge.
The Delhi government is actively working to improve the situation by connecting all households to sewerage treatment infrastructure. A target has been set to double the city's sewage treatment capacity within the next three years to mitigate the ongoing pollution of the Yamuna.
