A recent report by a parliamentary panel has sounded the alarm on the dire state of the Yamuna River, describing it as facing "profound ecological collapse." The committee emphasized critical issues like fixing a scientific ecological flow and halting the unchecked discharge of industrial waste and sewage into the river.
To combat this, the panel strongly recommended mapping all industrial units using Geographic Information System (GIS) technology. It also called for upgrading common effluent treatment plants (CETPs) to effectively manage toxic pollutants, noting their current low capacity utilization allows significant industrial wastewater to bypass treatment.
The report further stressed the necessity of real-time monitoring of water quality and volume, alongside mandatory mapping of the desludging tanker ecosystem. The mandatory reuse of treated wastewater was also highlighted as a crucial step towards the Yamuna's environmental recovery.
