Karnataka Orders Probe into Toxic Industrial Discharge
30 Sep
Summary
- Untreated wastewater allegedly discharged into drains and Bhima River.
- More than 50 companies operate in the affected industrial area.
- District administration has issued a temporary injunction order.
In response to villager complaints, the Karnataka government has mandated an inspection of industries in Yadgir's Kadechur-Badiyal industrial area. Allegations state that untreated industrial wastewater is being released into open drains, ultimately contaminating the Bhima River. Forest Minister Ramalinga Reddy has directed the State Pollution Control Board to conduct thorough inspections, collect wastewater samples for laboratory testing, and inquire into potential negligence by monitoring officials. The industrial zone reportedly houses over 50 companies, with villagers expressing deep concern about the impact of wastewater from chemical and pharmaceutical units on their crops, livestock, and drinking water sources.
The district administration has taken initial action, issuing a temporary injunction order under Section 153 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, on September 14th. This action is directed at M/s Formel Labs Pvt. Ltd. and M/s Ramis Laboratories Pvt. Ltd., both involved in pharmaceutical manufacturing. An inquiry is underway to gather evidence and determine if wastewater entered local drains and the Bhima River, and if effluent treatment norms were followed. A compliance report has been requested from the Pollution Control Board, with disciplinary action considered for any officials found negligent in their monitoring duties.
