A reticulated python, affectionately named Ibu Baron, has been confirmed by Guinness World Records as the longest verifiably measured wild snake globally. Discovered in late 2025 in the Maros region of South Sulawesi, Indonesia, this magnificent reptile measures an impressive 23 feet 8 inches and weighs 213 pounds. Explorer Radu Frentiu and wildlife guide Diaz Nugraha documented these measurements on January 18, 2026, emphasizing the snake's immense size.
Ibu Baron's survival is attributed to local conservationist Budi Purwanto, who rescued her from potential sale or harm. He has provided her with a sanctuary, recognizing the risks posed by habitat loss and scarce prey, which often drive such large snakes into human settlements. Purwanto aims to demonstrate that these giant pythons hold more value alive, potentially through eco-tourism initiatives.
Frentiu believes Ibu Baron's true length may be even greater, as measurements were taken without sedation. The python's recognition by Guinness World Records is seen as a critical step in shifting local attitudes. By highlighting her importance, conservationists hope to empower communities to protect these creatures as a valuable, long-term resource rather than a threat.
