Oslo, Norway, has been recognized as the world's greenest city, according to a recent Green City Index. The Norwegian capital achieved an overall score of 77.3 out of 100. Notably, 95% of its over 724,000 residents have access to green spaces within 300 meters.
The city also boasts superior air quality and unique initiatives like a bee highway established in 2015 to support endangered bee populations. Pocket parks are a common feature, transforming former parking spaces into green oases.
Vilnius, Lithuania, secured the second position with a score of 72.3 and was previously honored as the European Green Capital for 2025. Helsinki, Finland, ranked third, followed by Vienna, Austria, and Canberra, Australia.
Reading, a city in the south of England, achieved ninth place globally, making it the greenest city in the UK. It features 35% of its area dedicated to public green space and integrates historic sites with manicured gardens.
Further recognition was given to Heilbronn, Germany, as Europe's Green Capital for 2027. This award was announced at the European Green Capital Awards ceremony in Vilnius, where Heilbronn received top scores in air quality, water management, and climate adaptation.
