Woodley & Earley Speed Limits Slashed for New Cycle Route
13 Jan
Summary
- Work on a new walking and cycling route will commence this month.
- Speed limits are reduced to 20mph in specific areas for the route.
- The government-funded project aims to enhance safety for vulnerable road users.

Work on a new walking and cycling route connecting Woodley town centre to Palmer Park is slated to commence later this month. The project includes a significant adjustment to traffic regulations, with speed limits being cut to 20mph in designated areas along Woodlands Avenue, Palmerstone Road, and Culver Lane.
The plan, approved despite more public consultation responses opposing the speed reduction than supporting it, aims to create a safer environment for vulnerable road users. Adrian Betteridge, the council's executive member for active travel, highlighted the clear benefits of 20mph zones for those walking, cycling, or wheeling.
Government funding will support the initial phase in Woodlands Avenue, expected to begin on January 26th and conclude by mid-August. Further works in Culver Lane and Church Road are scheduled for the summer. The council anticipates these changes will encourage more people to choose active travel, thereby reducing congestion.
