Heart Flash Mob Fights Woodland Homes Plan
31 Oct
Summary
- Hundreds protested housing plans by forming a heart shape.
- The proposed homes threaten ancient Weston Big Wood.
- North Somerset Council is examining the housing plan.
Campaigners sent a message of unity by forming a heart shape during a flash mob protest against housing developments planned near Weston Big Wood. More than 300 residents participated in the event on Saturday, following the hand-delivery of a petition with 11,153 signatures to 10 Downing Street earlier in the week.
The proposed housing sites, Tower Farm and Black Rock, are situated close to Weston Big Wood, an ancient woodland and a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Campaigners emphasize the irreplaceable nature of the habitat and its role as a buffer zone.
North Somerset Council confirmed that the sites are part of a submitted Local Plan currently undergoing independent examination. The council stated that potential impacts on the woodland have been considered with appropriate mitigation measures and acknowledged the strong community sentiment regarding the proposals.
