In Coimbatore, a dedicated group of women, known as Women Wetland Watch, gathers monthly for birdwatching expeditions, fostering a deep connection with nature. This initiative, supported by the Siddharth Foundation, focuses on environmental conservation and aims to engage women in understanding biodiversity. The program began in 2023 and has since seen over 450 women participate in documenting 146 species of birds, alongside insects, butterflies, and reptiles across 11 city wetlands.
Participants, ranging from teachers to dentists, find respite from their routines and a sense of community. The initiative prioritizes mental connection with nature over technical bird identification skills. Many members share that their interest in birding was sparked by their children, highlighting a generational connection to conservation. The group's activities extend beyond simple observation, with members feeling a responsibility to address environmental concerns like wetland pollution.
The Women Wetland Watch team actively uses the eBird app to document their findings, contributing valuable data on local ecosystems. Senior members share their expertise, guiding newer participants on bird identification. This collective effort not only enriches the members' lives but also raises awareness about the ecological importance of urban wetlands and the need for their preservation.
