Rare Wolf-Dog Hybrids Discovered in Pune Grasslands
26 Mar
Summary
- Four wolf-dog hybrid pups were found in Pune's Kadbanwadi area.
- Pups exhibit mixed traits and were with a wolf pack.
- Genetic study is underway to assess hybridization extent.

Forest officials in Pune district have isolated four wolf-dog hybrid pups found in the Kadbanwadi grasslands. These pups, exhibiting mixed physical traits, were associated with an Indian grey wolf pack. Their discovery has prompted immediate intervention by the forest department due to growing concerns about hybridization impacting the wild wolf population.
The isolated pups have been transferred to a transit treatment center in Bavdhan for intensive monitoring of their behavior and development. This observation aims to determine if the hybrids display more canine or lupine tendencies. A collaborative genetic study with the Wildlife Institute of India is being initiated to confirm the extent of crossbreeding.
Hypbridization poses a significant conservation threat, potentially diluting the Indian grey wolf's genetic integrity, weakening survival traits, and increasing disease transmission risks from domestic dogs. This scenario is particularly concerning for Pune, which already faces challenges with its stray dog population.
The incident underscores the increasing overlap between human settlements, domestic animals, and wildlife habitats. The presence of free-ranging dogs in grassland areas is identified as a primary factor contributing to such crossbreeding, making management in mixed-use landscapes increasingly complex for authorities.
