20 Oct
Summary
- Highly pathogenic avian influenza confirmed in Wisconsin flock.
- Quarantine and depopulation enacted to prevent disease spread.
- State urges biosecurity measures for livestock owners.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, has been confirmed in a commercial poultry flock located in Barron County, Wisconsin. Agriculture officials announced the detection on Monday. The affected property has since been quarantined to prevent the movement of poultry and related products.
To contain the outbreak, the birds on the property were depopulated. State officials have assured that these birds will not enter the food system. A control area has been established within a 10-kilometer radius of the infected site, restricting poultry movement on or off premises.
The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection, in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is managing the response. Livestock owners are strongly advised to enhance biosecurity measures, including handwashing and equipment disinfection. Poultry owners are encouraged to house birds indoors when possible and report any signs of illness or increased mortality.
