The GranMorgu FPSO's upcoming voyage from China to Suriname will feature a pioneering wind-assisted towing system. STS JV, a collaboration between SBM Offshore and Technip Energies, alongside TotalEnergies EP Suriname, will co-develop and operate Beyond the Sea's SeaKite 2400 system. This technology is designed to harness wind power to assist in towing large vessels, a first for an FPSO.
The primary objectives include reducing the tow duration and minimizing fuel consumption during the long journey. Successful deployment will validate kite traction solutions for large-scale maritime applications, supporting broader industry decarbonization goals. The project will undergo phased research and development, including technology qualification and shore testing.
Beyond the Sea's SeaKite system combines an intelligent autopilot with a kite to provide automated traction, potentially reducing fuel consumption by approximately 20%. The technology is engineered for straightforward installation and features an AI that optimizes sail positioning for maximum performance, offering a scalable alternative to traditional propulsion for various vessel types.
