MP Urges Wildlife Overpasses for Chandrapur Corridor
21 Mar
Summary
- Wildlife fatalities are increasing on the Chandrapur-Mul highway.
- MP Pratibha Dhanorkar requested wildlife overpasses from the Union Minister.
- The 'Pench model' is proposed for safe wildlife and traffic passage.

Concerned about escalating wildlife deaths along the Chandrapur-Mul corridor, MP Pratibha Dhanorkar has formally requested Union Minister Nitin Gadkari to approve the construction of wildlife overpasses on National Highway 930. The highway, a crucial forest passage, faces heavy coal and cement transport, leading to frequent roadkills of protected animals. Dhanorkar emphasized the necessity of engineering solutions over temporary traffic control to mitigate this crisis.
She proposed adopting the successful 'Pench model,' which integrates infrastructure development with environmental preservation, ensuring safe wildlife passage and maintaining traffic flow. Dhanorkar also highlighted the need for expedited approvals from the National Board for Wildlife and inter-ministerial coordination to secure funding. These measures are expected to significantly reduce human-wildlife conflict and protect the region's ecological balance.
