July Fires Surge: Dorset & Wilts Fire Service Faces 4-Year High
12 Aug
Summary
- Fire service recorded 277 grassland fires in July, its busiest month in four years.
- Ongoing heatwaves and dry conditions significantly increase wildfire risk.
- Service urges public to avoid barbecues, campfires, and extinguish smoking materials.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service (DWFRS) experienced its busiest July in four years, responding to 277 fires involving grasslands, woodlands, and crops. This surge coincides with the region enduring its fifth heatwave of the summer.
Area manager Marc House noted the challenging conditions but expressed gratitude to the public for their cooperation. With no immediate prospect of rain and another heatwave anticipated, he emphasized the ongoing need for caution to prevent fires.
DWFRS is advising residents to avoid barbecues and campfires, especially in open spaces and heathland. Proper extinguishment of smoking materials and avoiding sky lanterns are also critical. The service stressed that fires spread rapidly in dry spells and can devastate the environment for decades.
