- Elephants are frequent visitors to Narengi Cantonment near Amchang Wildlife Sanctuary.
Three wild elephants were recently spotted moving through the Panjabari-Bagharbari area of Guwahati, a sight that caused significant concern among local residents. The incident prompted immediate action from the Forest Department.
Personnel from the Forest Department swiftly arrived at the scene and initiated efforts to guide the elephants back towards the forest. Firecrackers were employed as a deterrent to prevent the animals from venturing further into densely populated neighborhoods.
According to the divisional forest officer, the elephants are regular visitors to the area and belong to a population that traverses the Narengi Cantonment. This cantonment itself serves as an elephant habitat due to its proximity to the Amchang Wildlife Sanctuary.
Officials noted the absence of a specifically designated elephant corridor, as the animals generally remain within their natural habitat. However, their movements are closely monitored, especially when they approach human settlements. Residents have been advised to keep a safe distance and refrain from disturbing the elephants.
