Europe's Giant Wind Farm Gets a Facelift

Whitelee Windfarm, one of Europe's largest onshore wind facilities near Glasgow, is undergoing a significant transformation. The existing 215 turbines, operational for nearly two decades, will be replaced over a decade-long, phased project.
Approximately 124 new, taller turbines will be installed, boosting the farm's electricity output from 539 megawatts to 1 gigawatt. This upgrade, costing £1.5 billion, is projected to be fully operational by 2035 and will be sufficient to power around 650,000 homes.
The repowering project aims to replace turbines reaching the end of their natural lifespan, ensuring continued clean energy production. Scottish Power Renewables anticipates generating approximately £330 million for the Scottish economy through this initiative.
Site accessibility for the public, including walkers and dog walkers, will be maintained throughout the three-phase construction. This upgrade follows similar successful repowering projects at other wind farms, highlighting a trend as much of Great Britain's wind capacity nears its end of life.
