Doon Zoo in Dehradun has welcomed its first white Royal Bengal tiger, a 2.4-year-old male named Tejas. The young tiger underwent a 13-hour, 514-km overland journey from Gandhi Zoological Park in Gwalior. This translocation, completed between September 25 and September 28, is part of a broader ex-situ conservation effort overseen by the Central Zoo Authority.
Tejas was part of a reciprocal exchange; a normal-colored male tiger was transferred from Corbett to Gwalior. He exhibits leucism, a genetic condition characterized by reduced pigmentation, giving him a white coat, dark stripes, and striking blue eyes. This differs from albinism, which results in unpigmented eyes.
The tiger has shown a strong adaptation to his new home, actively exploring his enclosure and readily consuming his food ration. He is under continuous monitoring by a specialized veterinary team to assess his recovery from transit stress and behavioral adjustment. The zoo plans to potentially acquire another white tiger, subject to Central Zoo Authority approval.
