13 Jan
Summary
- White storks, absent for six centuries, will return to East London in October 2026.
- Beavers are also scheduled for reintroduction to the park in March 2027.
- Nearly £500,000 in funding has been secured for this ambitious rewilding initiative.

London's skies will once again host white storks, absent for six centuries, with their reintroduction planned for October 2026 at Eastbrookend Country Park. This initiative is part of a broader effort to rewild urban spaces and reconnect residents with nature. The park's wetlands have been prepared to support the storks, which will initially be housed in a large aviary.
Following the storks, beavers are expected to return to the park in March 2027, having been absent from the capital for approximately 400 years. These animals are vital for ecological regeneration, as they create diverse wetland habitats. The project aims to demonstrate that suitable habitats for wildlife exist even within urban environments.
This rewilding effort has secured nearly £500,000 from the mayor of London's Green Roots Fund, with additional support from local councils and the London Wildlife Trust. The initiative emphasizes community involvement, offering families and schools a chance to participate in a hopeful environmental project and fostering a new generation of urban conservationists.
