Whale Rescue Triumph: Timmy's Epic Sea Journey
30 Apr
Summary
- Humpback whale Timmy rescued after five weeks stranded.
- Specialized barge used to transport whale to North Sea.
- Experts expressed skepticism about the whale's survival.

A humpback whale, affectionately named Timmy, has been successfully rescued after becoming stranded and entangled on Timmendorfer Beach in Lübeck Bay on March 23. The mammal's plight garnered significant national attention as initial attempts to return it to deeper waters failed. Entrepreneurs Karin Walter-Mommert and Walter Gunz took initiative, funding a novel rescue operation.
This innovative plan involved luring Timmy onto a specialized barge filled with water. The whale was then transported via Denmark towards the North Sea. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's environment minister hailed the effort as an exemplary achievement for Germany. He anticipated the whale would reach the North Sea within two days.
However, experts from the International Whaling Commission expressed concerns, suggesting the whale's condition was severely compromised due to repeated strandings. They cautioned that the operation might create false hope, as the animal's survival was deemed unlikely even if moved to deeper water. Despite these reservations, the rescue director noted the emotional success of seeing the whale swim into its oceangoing enclosure, while still warning it was not entirely out of danger.
