The Indian Centre is nearing the final notification of Ecologically Sensitive Areas (ESA) in the Western Ghats. This crucial biodiversity hotspot, spanning six states, is set for enhanced protection after years of deliberation.
Over 56,000 square kilometers are proposed as ESA, based on 2013 recommendations. The plan includes significant restrictions, banning activities like new mining, quarrying, thermal power plants, and construction projects above 20,000 square meters.
While agreements are nearing finalization with Gujarat, Goa, and Maharashtra, negotiations continue with Kerala and Karnataka. A final notification will grant greater legal authority to protect the Western Ghats, a region vital for India's ecological and climatic stability.
