West Midlands Wildfires Rage Amidst Dry Spell
5 Aug
Summary
- Hot, dry weather exacerbates frequent wildfires across the West Midlands.
- Over 99% of wildfires are caused by human ignitions, often unintentionally.
- Disposable barbecues are a major risk, causing protected habitats to burn.

Hot and dry weather conditions have led to a significant increase in wildfires across the West Midlands. Fire services have been exceptionally busy responding to blazes affecting nature reserves, agricultural land, and even areas near railways.
Wildfire experts explain that the region's high population density, combined with dry vegetation, creates a perfect environment for fires. It is estimated that over 99% of the approximately 30,000 wildfires occurring annually in the UK are caused by human ignitions, with many being accidental.
Disposable barbecues have been identified as a major risk factor. A recent incident on Cannock Chase saw a wildfire, started by a barbecue, destroy a football pitch-sized area of protected heathland, killing wildlife. Staffordshire Wildlife Trust is actively discouraging barbecue use in high-risk reserves.
Efforts are underway to mitigate fire risks, including service suspensions on the Severn Valley Railway and advice provided to farmers. However, deliberate fire-setting also remains a concern, with authorities urging the public to report suspicious behavior and emphasizing the severe consequences of such actions.
