Summary
- Hafren Dyfrdwy to pay £280,000 fine for sewage spills.
- Regulator found company failed duties in wastewater and sewage.
- Company must implement measures like storm water tanks.

Hafren Dyfrdwy, a water supplier serving approximately 109,000 customers in north-east and mid-Wales, has been fined £280,000 by regulator Ofwat. This penalty addresses "unacceptable" failures that resulted in sewage spills.
Ofwat’s investigation revealed that the company failed in its duties regarding wastewater and sewage management, lacking adequate processes and systems. These failures led to excessive spills from storm overflows.
As part of an enforcement package, Hafren Dyfrdwy must implement corrective measures by 2030. These include installing two storm water balancing tanks and collaborating on wetland habitat creation. Importantly, the cost of these measures will not be passed on to customers through increased bills.
This action is part of Ofwat's broader sector-wide investigation into sewage issues, which has already secured over £300 million in enforcement packages and fines. Ofwat emphasizes its commitment to holding water companies accountable and fostering customer trust.
