Human Waste & Maggots Mar Welsh National Park
4 Sep
Summary
- Human waste and maggot-infested food were found.
- Park wardens spent their holiday weekend cleaning.
- Fly-tipping increase baffles park authorities.

Bannau Brycheiniog National Park, also known as the Brecon Beacons, experienced significant fly-tipping and littering over the recent bank holiday weekend. In one of the worst incidents seen by park authorities, human waste, discarded camping equipment, and bags of maggot-infested food were found near Llyn y Fan Fawr. This event occurred following long-running wildfires in the area, adding to the challenges faced by park staff.
The park authority has stated there is no justification for such behavior, emphasizing that it is not wild camping but criminal fly-tipping. Wardens spent their holiday weekend clearing the mess, describing it as an unpleasant task. Bronwyn Lally, head of communications for the park authority, noted an increase in such incidents, describing the trend as baffling and difficult to address.
While acknowledging that social media can drive tourism to the "Instagrammable" park, Lally clarified that responsible influencers generally promote respectful visits. The authority is struggling to understand the shift in visitor attitudes, as discarding rubbish like BBQs and cans seems illogical given the extra weight involved in carrying them in. The park is urging visitors to adhere to the Countryside Code, specifically the principle of "leave no trace."
