Elephant Corridor Blocked by Illegal Resort
30 Jan
Summary
- Construction obstructs a vital passage for elephants in Wayanad.
- The project includes tourism facilities and private villas.
- Authorities accused of inaction on potential landslide risks.

A Kochi-based NGO, Animals and Nature Ethics Community Trust (ANEC), has formally petitioned senior officials regarding alleged illegal construction obstructing the Kottiyur-Periya elephant corridor in Wayanad, north Kerala. The NGO claims a commercial project named 'Komachi Park' at Boys Town is situated on a critical, narrow passage essential for elephant movement between Wayanad and Kannur districts. This development, located within 750 metres of the Kottiyoor Wildlife Sanctuary and its Eco Sensitive Zone, reportedly includes amusement rides, a swimming pool, villas, and a resort. ANEC highlighted the site's position on steep slopes near a stream and warned of increased landslide risks and human-elephant conflict, citing disaster management norms. Despite previous complaints forwarded by the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority in December 2025, ANEC alleges authorities have failed to act, urging immediate intervention to halt construction and review corridor restoration.
