A property owner near Camas, Washington, has been fined $71,800 for damaging protected wetlands on his property. Chad Williams neglected to obtain a required permit from the Washington State Department of Ecology before beginning construction. He proceeded to clear vegetation and cover the wetlands with dirt to build a house, driveway, and an outdoor shop.
Wetlands are critical ecosystems that serve as natural buffers, absorbing floodwaters and filtering pollutants. Their destruction impairs flood control, affects water quality, and devastates wildlife habitats. Despite attempts by the Department of Ecology to assist Williams in restoring the land, he has reportedly neglected his responsibility to rectify the damage.
Williams has 30 days from the issuance of the penalty to either pay the $71,800 fine or appeal the decision to Washington's Pollution Control Hearing Board. The Department highlighted his intentional actions that damaged known wetlands without authorization.
