30 May
Summary
- Washington D.C. ranked highest for park scores for the sixth consecutive year.
- Nearly all residents have park access within a 10-minute walk.
- The city excels in dog parks and splash pads but lags in playgrounds.

For the sixth consecutive year, Washington D.C. has secured the premier position in park scores among the 100 most populous U.S. cities. This designation underscores the nation's capital's commitment to green spaces and recreational facilities.
Earning 85.1 out of 100 points, D.C. notably achieved perfect scores for dog parks, senior centers, and splash pads. A remarkable 99% of its residents benefit from park access within a 10-minute walk, a figure significantly higher than the national average. The city boasts 693 parks, covering 21% of its land.
Despite these strengths, D.C.'s park system faces challenges. It received lower scores for park acreage, playgrounds (36/100), and sports fields (29/100). While residents in neighborhoods of color have slightly less park space per person than the city average, they still access more than those in white neighborhoods.
Other cities recognized in the report include Boise, Idaho, for dog park systems; Cincinnati for playgrounds; and Boston for splash pads. The rankings assess factors such as park acreage, amenities, and accessibility.
