Wales's Largest Rewilding Project Takes Flight
15 Feb
Summary
- Over 1,000 acres purchased in Ceredigion for rewilding.
- Project aims to restore ecosystems and welcome native species.
- Farmers' Union voices concerns about scale and funding.

Tir Natur, a Welsh charity established in 2022, has purchased over 405 hectares (1,000 acres) in Ceredigion's Cambrian Mountains to create Wales's largest rewilding project. This initiative aims to establish a flagship site for nature recovery, addressing the UK's biodiversity deficit.
The acquired land in Cwm Doethie will undergo restoration to revive its natural landscape, including rivers, peat bogs, and ancient woodland. The project intends to enhance carbon sequestration, reduce flood risk, and encourage the return of native species such as red squirrels and pine martens.
A wild grazing system using traditional cattle, ponies, and pigs is planned to aid natural regeneration. This approach is designed to kickstart ecological processes and restore the land's natural functions.
While the project seeks to support Welsh communities and culture, the Farmers' Union of Wales has raised concerns regarding its scale and transparency, particularly concerning long-term management and funding.
This venture positions Wales alongside larger UK rewilding efforts, such as Cairngorms Connect and Rewilding Affric Highlands, aiming to significantly boost nature recovery within the nation.
