Despite the government's ambitious net zero targets and plans to significantly boost solar power generation, environmental advocates argue that such developments are actively harming nature.
At the Gwent Levels near Newport, wildlife experts highlight that nearly a fifth of its Sites of Special Scientific Interest could be jeopardized by proposed solar developments. Gemma Bode from Gwent Wildlife Trust emphasizes the irreversible loss of irreplaceable landscapes and the unique historical sites, such as the Roman-built drainage network.
Nationally important species, including water voles, water beetles, dragonflies, and the rare shrill carder bees, are among those at risk. This is not the first time the Gwent Levels have faced development threats, with past campaigns successfully preventing motorway construction and halting significant solar projects.
