25 Mar
Summary
- Wales will include glass in its deposit return scheme starting in 2027.
- The scheme offers cash or vouchers for returning empty drinks containers.
- This move aims to tackle the significant rise in glass litter.

The Welsh government has officially approved legislation for a deposit return scheme (DRS) that will encompass glass containers, alongside plastic bottles and metal cans, from 2027. This decision was confirmed with a 41-to-17 vote in the Senedd.
This expanded DRS, which aligns with UK-wide plans for plastic and metal, aims to combat the increasing problem of glass litter impacting Wales's streets and coastlines. Deputy First Minister Huw Irranca-Davies highlighted that such schemes are proven internationally to reduce litter and boost recycling rates.
Plans are underway to appoint a "Deposit Management Organisation" to manage the scheme's operations, ensuring readiness by October 2027. The Welsh government is also exploring the inclusion of reusable containers to further support a circular economy and waste reduction efforts.
