Events celebrating International Vulture Awareness Day took place in The Nilgiris region from September 1 to 6. Organized by the conservation NGO Arulagam, in collaboration with local wildlife biology departments and volunteers, the initiative focused on educating the public about vulture conservation.
Activities included competitions for college students, emphasizing the ecological importance of vultures and encouraging a pledge for their protection. A 'Vulture Trophy' volleyball tournament was held to promote the creation of 'Vulture Safe Zones,' highlighting the need for safe food sources for these birds.
To combat vulture poisoning, herbal ethno-veterinary medicine kits were distributed free of cost to cattle rearers. This aims to discourage the use of detrimental drugs like diclofenac. Cattle tissue samples are also being collected to support the Nilgiris region's official declaration as a Vulture Safe Zone.
