Volusia County, Florida, has achieved a historic milestone by breaking its sea turtle nesting record. With over three months still left in the nesting season, the county has documented its 1,518th nest. This impressive number surpasses the previous record of 1,516 nests recorded during the entire season in 2023.
Field manager Nicole Weiss highlighted that this surge in sea turtle nesting is not unique to Volusia County but is occurring statewide. She emphasized that decades of dedicated conservation efforts have played a crucial role in enabling more sea turtles to survive to adulthood and reach their reproductive prime, a process that typically takes 20 to 30 years depending on the species.
As the nesting season continues until October 31, Volusia County's record is expected to grow even higher. Local authorities are urging beach visitors to contribute to the protection of nesting turtles and hatchlings by maintaining clean, flat, and dark beach conditions.
