Vizag Coastline Vanishing: 64m Lost Since 1990
2 Oct
Summary
- Vizag coastline retreated 64 meters between 1990 and 2024.
- Rushikonda, RK Beach, Yarada, Bheemilipatnam face high vulnerability.
- Urbanization tripled built-up area, increasing coastal hazard exposure.
Visakhapatnam's coastline has experienced a significant retreat, averaging 64 meters between 1990 and 2024. Certain stretches, including Rushikonda and RK Beach, face high coastal vulnerability, with erosion rates reaching up to 13.1 meters per year in some areas. This extensive study utilized satellite imagery and GIS analysis to track shoreline changes over 35 years.
Human activities, such as port construction and urban development, are major contributors to these changes. The built-up area in Visakhapatnam has surged from 10.64% in 1990 to 38.75% in 2024, while natural landscapes like grasslands have diminished. This expansion has reduced natural defenses against coastal hazards.
Researchers also noted a concerning trend of rising sea levels in Visakhapatnam, classifying the city as highly susceptible. They recommend implementing a range of solutions, including beach nourishment, seawall construction, mangrove restoration, and stricter coastal development controls to mitigate future risks.
