Vishwamitri River Dredging: Progress and Roadblocks Revealed

Flood mitigation efforts for Vadodara's Vishwamitri River are progressing slowly, with the removal of silt and construction debris along its banks proving to be a major hurdle. While short-term measures have been initiated following committee recommendations, the implementation of long-term solutions is still pending.
A recent survey identified 13 locations where construction waste has been dumped, with minimal progress made in clearing it. The Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) has directed its solid waste department to address this issue, acknowledging the substantial costs involved.
In addition to debris removal, VMC is planning future interventions such as constructing gabion walls to prevent erosion and installing sensors to monitor water levels. A detailed project report for the Vishwamitri riverfront development, focusing on amenities and observation points, is also being prepared.
Further plans include a significant upstream diversion project to channel excess water from the Vishwamitri to the Mini River, thereby reducing flood risk in the city. This project involves deepening and widening an existing channel, requiring an environmentally conscious approach in line with National Green Tribunal directives.
