First Indian Sighting of Venomous Box Jellyfish
2 May
Summary
- Venomous box jellyfish Morbakka virulenta found off Caranzalem beach.
- Morphological and molecular methods confirmed the species.
- Continuous monitoring urged due to potent jellyfish venom.

The highly venomous box jellyfish, identified as Morbakka virulenta, has been sighted for the first time in Indian waters. Scientists in Goa reported the discovery following observations off Caranzalem beach in September 2024. During their survey, nine specimens of Morbakka virulenta were identified.
Morphological and molecular identification methods were employed by researchers from NIO Goa to confirm the species. The findings have since been published, highlighting the species' presence.
Given the potent nature of box jellyfish venom, researchers stress the importance of continuous monitoring of coastal areas. This is crucial for managing potential risks to humans, especially as jellyfish stings have seen an increase along India's coasts in recent years, affecting both fishermen and tourists.
