The National Green Tribunal (NGT), Southern Zone, has issued a stern warning to the Coimbatore Corporation regarding the persistent issue of the Vellalore dumpyard. The NGT indicated readiness to divert fresh waste to other approved locations if the clearing progress remains unsatisfactory. This directive stems from concerns over the continuous accumulation of waste at the site.
The tribunal noted that the contractor tasked with processing legacy waste is significantly behind schedule. The NGT emphasized the need for the Commissioner to ensure daily readiness for waste shifting and to promote decentralized processing within the city. Phase II of bio-mining at Vellalore must process 1,200 tonnes daily, potentially increasing to 1,800 tonnes, aiming for completion by October 2026.
Furthermore, the NGT reiterated earlier directives from the Central Pollution Control Board, including 100% waste segregation at source and enhanced treatment capacity. The Corporation is required to submit month-wise progress reports for September, October, and November 2025, along with a comprehensive action plan. The next hearing is scheduled for January 12, 2026.
