Court Halts Varkala Project Over Eco-Risks

The high court has issued a stay order on the Swadesh Darshan 2.0: Varkala Dakshin Kashi Project, a development valued at Rs 25 crore. This intervention follows a public interest litigation alleging significant environmental violations, procedural gaps, and unplanned expenditure. The court's decision highlights concerns about the project's implementation near Varkala's fragile laterite cliffs, a geo-heritage site.

The project, part of a national tourism scheme, reportedly proceeded without essential approvals from bodies like the Kerala Coastal Zone Management Authority. Despite stop memos from local authorities, construction continued, leading the court to observe 'blatant violations' and term the ongoing work illegal. Officials from the tourism department and associated agencies have been ordered to file a detailed compliance report by February 12.

Environmental activists and locals have long opposed construction activities in the area, warning of accelerated erosion and cliff destabilization. The project's proximity to the Janardhana Swamy Temple and its location on cliffs overlooking the Arabian Sea have amplified concerns about preserving the region's ecological and cultural significance. The court will review all reports before a final decision.
