Pandeypur Crossing Overhaul: Solutions for Decades-Old Gridlock
5 Jul
Summary
- Municipal commissioner studied Pandeypur crossing traffic issues for hours.
- Divider removal and dedicated auto stand are key proposed changes.
- Past traffic solutions, including a flyover, failed to resolve congestion.
Varanasi's decades-old traffic congestion at the busy Pandeypur crossing is being addressed through a significant overhaul initiated recently. Municipal Commissioner Himanshu Nagpal, accompanied by engineers from the PWD and Varanasi Municipal Corporation (VMC), spent hours studying the critical intersection. Nagpal mandated immediate actions, including the removal of the existing divider to facilitate smoother movement.
Recognizing the impact of auto-rickshaw parking, a specific area has been designated as a formal auto stand. This measure aims to prevent autos from obstructing the main road and contributing to the persistent gridlock. Discussions also included plans for the complete revamp and beautification of the crossing, involving architects and traffic department officials.
Previous attempts to alleviate traffic at Pandeypur crossing, notably the construction of a flyover after 2008, have historically failed to provide commuters with lasting relief. This current initiative by the municipal administration seeks to implement a more effective and permanent solution to the chronic traffic issues.
