Valmiki Reserve Roars: Tiger Population Surges to 54!

International Tiger Day was observed at Valmiki Tiger Reserve (VTR) in West Champaran through various awareness initiatives focused on wildlife and environmental protection. Activities spanned multiple forest ranges, involving school students, local committees, and public representatives in marches, rallies, and competitions.

Forest officials honored students and staff for their contributions to conservation efforts. The main event, held in the Manguraha forest range, aimed to sensitize the community on the critical role of tigers, forests, and the environment.

VTR has implemented robust conservation measures, including 24/7 surveillance by approximately 450 forest personnel, anti-poaching camps, and regular patrols. Efforts to improve tiger habitats include expanding grasslands and developing waterholes to ensure sufficient prey and water for wildlife.

These sustained conservation actions have led to a significant rise in the tiger population. Official figures show an increase from 8-10 tigers in 2010 to 54 in the 2022-23 estimation, with recent assessments indicating further growth. VTR, comprising a core area and a buffer zone, continues its commitment to strengthening tiger numbers.
