Valmiki Tiger Reserve Closes for Monsoon Breeding Season
24 Jun
Summary
- Valmiki Tiger Reserve suspends jungle safaris from June 29 to September 30.
- Closure is due to monsoon, wildlife breeding season, and tourist safety.
- Other activities like nature trails and river boating remain open.

Activities at Valmiki Tiger Reserve (VTR) in West Champaran will be suspended from June 29 to September 30. This closure is a necessary measure due to the ongoing monsoon season and the wildlife breeding period. Officials confirmed the decision aligns with guidelines from the National Tiger Conservation Authority and the Bihar forest department.
The suspension specifically affects jungle safaris at the Valmikinagar, Manguraha, and Govardhana tourism centers. However, visitors can still participate in alternative activities. These include one-, two-, and three-day local tour packages, offering chances for wildlife viewing from watchtowers, engaging in nature trails, and enjoying boating on the Gandak river.
Despite the safari suspension, the reserve has experienced a notable increase in visitor numbers over recent years. In 2025-26, it welcomed 6.09 lakh visitors. This fiscal year alone, from April to May, 69,618 visitors were recorded. The number of foreign tourists has also seen a positive trend, rising from three in 2018-19 to 70 in 2025-26. Regular safari operations are scheduled to resume in October.
