Eaglets Take Flight Over Monongahela River
23 Jun
Summary
- Two eaglets recently took their first flights.
- Cameras captured the eaglets' first flights above the river.
- The eaglets are the ninth, tenth, and eleventh born at the plant.

Two eaglets from the U.S. Steel nest have successfully fledged, marking a significant milestone for the birds. Sid was the first to take flight shortly after 8 p.m. on Friday, with Maz following suit around 6 a.m. on Monday. These events were captured by a livestream camera, allowing viewers to witness the young eagles' first journeys into the sky above the Monongahela River.
The eaglets, named Sid, Maz, and Hutch, are the ninth, tenth, and eleventh to be born at U.S. Steel's Irvin Plant in West Mifflin. This nest, established in 2019, has been a source of fascination for viewers who have watched parents Stella and Irvin raise their young. This year's brood follows a successful nesting season last year when Stella and Irvin raised their first chick, Ocho.
Earlier in the spring, one eaglet faced a health scare after swallowing a fishhook. Due to the human-caused nature of the injury, wildlife rescuers were able to intervene, perform surgery, and successfully return the eaglet to its nest. Separately, a nest in Pittsburgh's Glen Hazel neighborhood experienced a tragic loss, with both eaglets dying in May from suspected bird flu.
