- These wetlands are vital for biodiversity, groundwater, and rainwater storage.

Three significant wetlands in Uttar Pradesh's Kasganj district have been officially recognized and entered into the state gazette, granting them legal protection. This protective status prohibits any construction, waste dumping, or encroachment within the designated areas of Bastauli Brahmpur, Ram Chhitouni, and Sikandarpur Khurd.
These wetlands, situated in the Patiyali and Sahawar regions, play a critical role in supporting local biodiversity. They are essential for recharging groundwater levels and effectively storing rainwater, contributing to the region's water security. Bastauli Brahmpur spans approximately 5.8 hectares, Ram Chhitouni covers about 4.6 hectares and holds religious significance associated with Maharishi Valmiki's ashram, while Sikandarpur Khurd is the largest at 9.6 hectares.
Replenished by rainwater and groundwater, these water bodies provide vital habitats for migratory birds and aquatic species. They also underpin local economies through activities like fish farming and agriculture. The Kasganj district administration had previously issued a preliminary notification to invite public objections and suggestions regarding the proposed wetland status. The National Mission for Clean Ganga has confirmed that these wetlands are now gazetted and legally safeguarded, marking a crucial step in their conservation.
