Ganga Cleanup: UP Seals Sewage Treatment Plant Deals

On Thursday, the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) announced the signing of concession agreements for two significant sewage treatment plant (STP) projects in Uttar Pradesh. These initiatives are set to enhance waste water management in Varanasi and Pt Deen Dayal Upadhyay Nagar.
The agreements greenlight a 60 million litres per day (MLD) STP at Lohta in Varanasi and a 45 MLD STP at Pt Deen Dayal Upadhyay Nagar. The Lohta project will intercept and treat sewage from Durga Drain before it enters the Varuna River, a tributary of the Ganga. The Pt Deen Dayal Upadhyay Nagar STP will similarly address untreated sewage flowing into the Ganga via the Railway Nala and Ganda Nala.
Both projects will be executed using the Hybrid Annuity-based Public-Private Partnership model. Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam is overseeing the implementation, with Varanasi Lohta STP Pvt Ltd and Varanasi DDU Nagar STP Pvt Ltd serving as the concessionaires. The Lohta project includes a 15-year operation and maintenance period. NMCG Director General Rajeev Kumar Mital emphasized the projects' importance in reducing pollution and improving the Ganga's water quality.
