Leopards to Be Sterilized in UP to Curb Conflict
20 Oct
Summary
- UP proposes sterilizing 75% of problem leopards over five years.
- The plan targets Bahraich, Lakhimpur Kheri, Pilibhit, Moradabad, Bijnor.
- Sterilization aims for a 15% annual reduction to control population growth.
Uttar Pradesh forest officials have submitted a significant proposal to capture and sterilize up to 75% of problem leopards across the Terai region over the next five years. This initiative aims to address escalating human-wildlife conflict as leopards increasingly inhabit areas near settlements.
The proposal, covering Bahraich, Lakhimpur Kheri, Pilibhit, Moradabad, and Bijnor, seeks approval for an annual sterilization target of 15%. Officials estimate that without intervention, leopard populations in these areas could grow by 201% within five years. This program represents Uttar Pradesh's first attempt at leopard population control through sterilization, serving as a sustainable alternative to repeated trapping and relocation.
Past efforts involving trapping and relocation have been inadequate, with leopards often returning to prey-rich farmlands. Zoos and rescue centers are also at capacity. The proposed plan integrates population management with strategies to minimize human-leopard encounters, potentially including physical barriers and a dedicated wildlife surgical facility.
