NGT Orders UP Govt to Detail Heavy Metal Aid

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has ordered the Uttar Pradesh government to submit detailed information regarding medical treatment and assistance provided to residents whose blood samples indicated the presence of chromium and mercury. These samples were collected from inhabitants of Rakhi Mandi, Rania in Kanpur Nagar, Kanpur Dehat, and Fatehpur districts. The samples were taken between January 2020 and October 2025.
The tribunal is presently examining applications related to water pollution attributed to industrial waste originating from tanneries in Kanpur's Jajmau area, contamination in Rania and Rakhi Mandi, and industrial pollution in Fatehpur's Godhrauli village. The NGT emphasized the critical nature of the issue, noting its direct effect on the well-being and economic stability of the affected populations.
The NGT's principal bench, including chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava and expert member A Senthil Vel, passed the order on February 3. The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) has pledged full cooperation. Fresh compliance reports have been filed by district magistrates and the state government. Advocate Katyayni Chaubey, appointed as amicus curiae, will review these reports.
The amicus curiae brought to the tribunal's attention lists of affected residents. Consequently, the NGT directed the state government to disclose the specifics of medical aid for each individual. The government has six weeks to file its report, with the next hearing scheduled for April 7.
