2 Nov
Summary
- State to develop 'Monkey Forests' across 762 urban local bodies.
- Initiative aims to provide natural habitats and reduce human-animal conflict.
- Waste management and public awareness campaigns will support the project.
Uttar Pradesh is introducing a novel 'Kapi Van' (Monkey Forest) program to address escalating monkey issues in urban areas. The state government plans to establish these dedicated forests in all 762 urban local bodies, with 120 already developed. This initiative seeks to provide monkeys with adequate food and shelter outside human habitats, thereby reducing human-animal conflict.
The project, designated for completion by 2028, will prioritize planting local and fruit-bearing tree species. Alongside habitat development, improvements in waste management, public awareness, and targeted measures in affected areas are underway. This includes installing 'monkey-proof' waste bins and identifying areas with high concentrations of fruit vendors.
Furthermore, expert consultation will guide monkey capture, transport, and relocation. Public awareness campaigns will be conducted at key locations like railway stations and schools, emphasizing the importance of not feeding monkeys and proper waste disposal. A database for monkey bites will be maintained, ensuring anti-rabies vaccine availability and emergency medical services.
